I have never been a hair girl. I’ve never dyed it, I get the same hair cut that I’ve gotten for the past 10 years (three inches off and lots of layers every six months, I’m boring af) and I don’t have the patience to try and do anything even mildly creative to it. You can often find me with my hair tossed up in a messy bun, with a full on contour and blazer. It is definitely odd but it’s just who I am.
I’ve always wanted to be someone who’s good at hair. With all of the braids and the up dos and the highlights. Or I’d even just appreciate being able to look semi polished. My hair is very fine but there is a ton of it, which means constant tangles 24/7. When I do wear it down I give off this “I don’t ever brush my hair” realness that at its best can be found in the “beachy waves” category and at it’s worst is a lot closer to a two year old waking up from a nap.
Despite my rocky romance with my mane, I’ve definitely upped my hair game over the past year in hopes to at the very least be able to limit my time trying to tame it. I’ve tried several different brands, but Dry Bar has become my hands down favorite! The formula of their products and the quality of their tools have totally made my hair way less of a hassle to deal with.
DEEP CONDITION
I’ve always bought my shampoo and conditioner based on scent which while this tactic has gotten me several compliments over the years, it hasn’t exactly protected my locks from damage. I only wash and condition my hair twice a week (usually Fridays and Tuesdays) so now when I do I try to make it count. Lately I’ve been using the OGX Tsubaki Blossom Shampoo to wash my hair and scalp, but I follow it with the Dry Bar Mudslide Nourishing Hair Mask to keep my hair super soft and moisturized. I run it through my hair and my scalp and leave it in for ten minutes while I complete everything else on my shower agenda. Then I used a wide toothed comb to brush out all of the tangles in my hair before rinsing out the mask. Every few weeks I’ll put the mask on and sleep with it overnight using the Dry Bar Morning After Shower Cap and I wake up and rinse it out in the morning. My hair feels so soft and heathy afterwards, I’m addicted to this mask. When it dries it’s so much bouncier and easier to manage.
DRY SHAMPOO FOR THE WIN
I love dry shampoo, mostly because it allows me to be extremely lazy and avoid the sometimes thirty minute task of washing my hair on the daily (I mean I do other stuff in there too, but my hair cleansing process takes forever). I really like the Dove Dry Shampoo and it’s definitely a great, less expensive alternative to my other favorite from Dry Bar; Detox Dry Shampoo. This stuff seriously eliminates all of the oil and dirt from my roots which gets the greasiest (super cute, I know) and makes my hair look like I just washed and blow dried it that day.
ADD SOME TEXTURE
While I joke around about my messy hair, I do actually really like that casual, effortless vibe that comes with it. For days when I’m feeling real lazy I reach for the Dry Bar Mai Tai Spritzer Sea Salt Spray to add some texture and volume to my hair. I usually apply it right out of the shower and run it through my strands, but sometimes I’ll apply a little when it’s dry too and I’m looking to give it some life. This is perfect for when I’m so not down to actually style it but don’t want my hair to be flat and boring.
PRICIER HOT TOOLS ARE A GOOD INVESTMENT
I use my roommate’s blow dryer on the rare occasion when I don’t just toss my wet hair up into a top knot or let is air dry overnight. I had been using the same curling iron that I’ve had since HIGH SCHOOL. An old Conair situation that definitely did the trick until it broke a month ago. I have a Nume straightener that I love but I bought it when it went on super sale because the thought of spending over $100 for a hair product seems absurd to me. This is coming from the girl who spends way over $1000 every year to maintain her VIB Rouge status at Sephora. Priorities, am I right?
I replaced my broken curling iron with a cheap Conair one that I thought would be fine, but I was VERY wrong. It didn’t curl my hair as much as it just put ugly dents in it. I knew I had to bite the bullet.
I picked up the Dry Bar 3-Day Bender Digital Curling Iron and my life changed forever. What use to be a 30 minute production that left me bored and overheated is now a 10 minute miracle. I’m serious, curling my entire head of hair took me 10 minutes last night. TEN MINUTES.
The beauty of this curling iron is its’ rotating clamp that makes it so much easier and faster to get perfect, bouncy curls. The heating settings are adjustable and it takes just a few seconds to create curls that last for days. I use a little bit of hair spray, brush it out with my fingers to separate the curls and my hair is done for the next three days. Total game changer.
