I have yet to meet a person who doesn’t like pizza. Everyone loves pizza. It is a universal favorite. So it could be argued that one of the reasons I can’t diet is just pizza in general. However, I could absolutely live without many of the pizzas I have tried. And I do consider myself to be a pizza connoisseur. There are several pizza places in San Francisco that do it for me. Little Star, Pizza Orgasmica, Sophia’s Pizzeria, just to name a few. But for me, there is nothing more comforting than getting a slice from Deja Vu Pizza & Pasta on 16th and Guerrero.
The place itself is super small. Just three tables and an open kitchen, separated by a counter. Pretty unsuspecting, but do not be fooled: there is deliciousness to be found there. First of all, any place that tells me that they will make me a slice fresh with anything I want on it, is already earning points. While Deja Vu has a huge menu of a ton of different slices, all titled based on locations in the city, as well as a long list of pastas and other tasty treats, I always opt for creating my own slice.
My personal favorite combination is pepperoni, black olive, and ground beef. Some of you may be disgusted and others may be impressed. But that’s just how I do it. I’m a meat lover, what can I say?
Deja Vu delivers and accepted pick up orders. I live in the Mission district, only about ten minutes away and have a cousin who lives extremely close to Deja Vu. So I often will be hanging out with her, and all of a sudden have a hankering for dough and cheese. It is a frequent occurrence. So I always order for pickup and walk over. It never takes more than 10 minutes, which I appreciate.
The first time I ordered a slice, and went in to pay and I was slightly annoyed that they were charging me 7 bucks for one slice of pizza. But then I SAW the slice. When they say one slice, they actually mean two. And those two slices are HUGE. Totally appropriately priced. I am a ranch person, so I always get a side as well and then I skip back to my cousin’s apartment, giddy with excitement.
Now here are the top two reasons why I love Deja Vu’s pizza: 1. They have rosemary crusts. So the crust is not just a thick foundation of dough, it is just as tasty on it’s own as it is dipped in ranch. 2. I am not into a lot of sauce on my pizza. This is entirely a preference thing. They go heavy on the cheese, light on the sauce, and I love it. Their cheese to sauce ratio is on point.
I have never had a bad slice at Deja Vu. They taste the same every time, which earns them big points for consistency. Made to order, huge, delicious slices, every time.
Their pizza is definitely the star of the show, which is why it is my main focus, however, I have ventured out a time or two and gotten their pasta. It’s a little bit above mediocre. Depending on which one you get, it could be pretty good. I’m a fan of their cajun linguini, however I am NOT a fan of their ravioli. They need to work on the consistency of their pasta sauces before they truly win me over. They do, however, without a doubt know what they’re doing in the pizza department.
My one and only issue with them, is that I have ordered from there a MILLION times. I go there frequently. I probably have paid for their rent several times by now. I am a pizza enthusiast, and they just make it so easy for me. However, the two women that are always taking the orders try and act like they don’t recognize me. They try and act like I’m not their best customer. They’re not rude, by any means. But I would just like it if they said “Hey you, want your usual?” or “What’s up ground beef!”. Well, maybe not the second one. Either way, all I want is for them to admit that they recognize me and that they love me. That’s all.
So no, I can’t possibly stick to a diet while Deja Vu is still in existence. There’s just no way.
